botox in the bladder

Botox is a form of botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin works by blocking the release of a chemical needed for nerve transmission. As a result, the nerve signals that tell your bladder to contract are blocked. This prevents unwanted bladder contractions and decreases symptoms of overactive bladder. Botox injections can also be used to treat pain due to interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) and chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). In these conditions, the Botox injection is not directed into the bladder but into the pelvic region directly.

WHAT IS BOTOX? Botox is a drug made from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum called botulinum toxin. Botox is used cosmetically to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles. WHAT IS BOTOX USED FOR? At one time, only people with spasms or tremors were treated with Botox. However, today it is being used to treat several other conditions. These include cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, migraine headaches and severe underarm sweating. It also is used cosmetically to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles that cause lines to form in the face. HOW DOES IT WORK? The Botox molecule binds to nerve endings and prevents them from releasing a chemical messenger called acetylcholine. This action blocks signals from the nerves that trigger muscle contraction when acetylcholine is released from the ends of nerves where they meet muscle cells (called neuromuscular junctions). Blocking the release of acetylcholine prevents muscle contractions and may tem...
